Cornhusker League
Unlike the recently formed Metro League, the venerable Cornhusker League has been around for several decades. The League consists of fourteen Senior Legion teams and fourteen Junior Legion teams, each assigned to one of two divisions, East and West. Each team in the League plays a ten-game league schedule. The eight baseball programs in the East Division are seeded 1 through 8 based on the combined win-loss records of their Junior and Senior teams from the previous year. Teams ranked 1, 4, 5 and 8 play each other twice and play the teams ranked 2, 3, 6 and 7 once. Likewise, the 2, 3, 6 and 7 teams play each other twice and play the 1, 4, 5 and 8 teams once to make a ten-game schedule. In the West Division, each of the six teams plays the other five teams twice, either in a home and home format or a double-header.
The League's regular season will conclude on July 1, with league competition culminating in Junior Legion and Senior Legion League Championship Games between the West Division Champion and the East Division Champion at each level. This years' Cornhusker League Championship Games will be played on July 5th with the Senior Legion Championship Game to be played on the home field of the West Division Champion and the Junior Legion Championship Game on the home field of East Division Champion.
The 2010 Cornhusker League Senior Legion All-Star game will be played the following day, July 6, at 7:00 PM at Grand Island's Ryder Park. The head coaches for this year's All-Star Game will be Steve Illingworth of Hastings Five Points Bank at the helm of the West All-Stars and Jerry Dittenber of Judds Brothers Construction (Lincoln Northeast) guiding the East All-Stars. Illingworth will be assisted by Nick Handley of Columbus Bank and Darren Tobey of North Platte First National. Dittenbers' assistant coaches will be Tim Champ of Fremont First State Bank and Mike Sterns of U-Stop (Lincoln East).
Teams in the Cornhusker League are assigned to one of three different Area Tournaments -- Areas 5, 6 or 7. Since those Areas also include teams that are not in the League, the league results are not used to seed those areas. Instead, Areas 5, 6 and 7 are seeded on the basis of winning percentage for all games played by teams in those Areas.
Steve Spongberg, head coach of Kearney Runza Senior Legion, and Brad Archer, head coach of Kearney Post 52 Junior Legion, are the league president and league secretary/treasurer, respectively.
The Cornhusker League division alignments for 2010 will remain as follows (Area indicated in brackets):
